| Bunjin Arrangement |
This is a type of ikebana that is based on a Japanese interpretation of
the taste of Chinese bunjin, or literati. It gives much weight to the symbolic
use of plants and has an expressive literary quality. Emphasis is placed
on the elegance and poetic nature of rare blooms, shrubs and plants. The
combination of materials is based on the subjects of the Southern Sung
School of Chinese painting. Therefore, it is important to study such paintings
as well as the paintings and writings of Japanese bunjin. The Bunjin Arrangement
is not bound by floral styles, and materials may be freely arranged to
express one's subjective view of plants.
